Policy
The following areas are covered by our environmental policy:
Commitment to achieve, or improve upon, regulatory standards Commitment to achieve, or improve upon, regulatory standards:
demonstrated by our registration to the ISO 9001 Quality Management System in 1992 and the fact that we were one of very few print companies to have achieved ISO 14001 Environmental Standard Accreditation, in 1998. We are now certified to the FSC who promote the development of sustainable forest management worldwide.
Waste reduction Waste reduction:
We actively seek to minimise both the volume and the toxicity of waste produced. We recycle and re-use by-product materials wherever possible.
Energy and water usage Energy and water usage:
We can't help using electricity, gas and water in our production processes, but we strive to minimise consumption, monitoring usage on a daily basis and installing best practices through staff directives.
Emissions Emissions:
Ten per cent of all volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by British Industry are attributed to the print production. We have taken positive steps to reduce and, where possible, eliminate such chemical emissions. We undertake regular monitoring in conjunction with the HSE, and the results show that we are well below current statutory benchmark levels.
Material selection Material selection:
Wherever possible we will propose to our customers that they use materials from our approved materials list. This includes paper from sustainable resources manufactured without the aid of chlorine; recycled paper that has been de-inked in chlorine-free recycling plants; and paper from preferred manufacturers whose manufacturing processes maximise energy efficiency, minimise fresh water usage and cause no gas emissions.
Treatments and disposal Treatments and disposal:
Regrettably, we cannot yet eliminate the use of all potentially harmful substances in our works. However, such substances are recycled for further safe use whenever possible, and treated before disposal in a controlled and approved manner.
Research and development Research and development:
As described elsewhere on this site, we keep abreast of all innovations that affect our industry. We lay particular emphasis on products and processes that will improve overall efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of our activities.
Our immediate environment Our immediate environment:
Our purpose-built headquarters meet our own targets of minimising damage to the environment and making positive contributions where we can. The natural brick and dark green elevations help the building to blend into the environment, and it is effectively insulated and double-glazed to minimise heat loss. The climate controlled workspaces use CFC-free coolants and heat pump technology to recycle heat produced during the print production process. We have preserved ancient hedgerows around the site, and planted indigenous plants and trees to help preserve and enhance the wildlife habitat.
Staff training Staff training:
We have established an integrated environmental management system that is at the core of our staff development programme. Members of staff are allotted specific responsibilities for monitoring and management of every aspect of the system.

About Us
Environment
BCQ sees climate change as our most critical environmental challenge. We acted early to reduce the risk of any negative impact by minimising our contribution to the causes. We aim to be an 'environmentally neutral' producer: that is, to reduce our impact on the environment to an absolute minimum and, where possible, to contribute positively to its preservation and recovery. As a result, we've won or been a finalist in 11 environmental awards in the last 8 years.
Our dedication to environmental best practice is recognised too, as we are certified to environmental standard ISO14001 and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This means we not only ensure your requirements are produced to the strictest environmental standards but, can also be produced on materials which are certified to have come from well managed and sustainable forests.

"BCQ have more than met the brief; our front pages are more popular than ever. But they've really opened up the potential for what can be done with online trading and fulfilment for Mirrorpix. The site is fun, easy to use and one of a kind. "Marketing Manager
